  1. MD - no contest.

Mass. - kind of a toss up. I give it to Mass on the slightly simpler design. less busy

DC - any flag that doesn't carry a seal will usually win for me. Their flag looks like a country flag... I guess if they cannot be a state, they could secede and be a country. I'm sure the Colonel would support that.

CT - while RI makes me want to sign up for the Merchant Marine, CT wins because they have the balls to put dollar signs on their flag. no pretense about what is really important here.

(I predict very few, if any, seals on a blue background will make it to the Sweet 16. :) )

Am I correct in assuming that the 2x bonus isn't applicable for this round? (If I am incorrect, I'll give my 2x to DC)

  5. Maryland (x2) - I'm part of the "love it" team. It's got a medieval NASCAR vibe.

Massaschusetts - Don't much like the white field, but it's better than that sky blue which blends in with the sky on many photos I googled up.

DC - Virginia's seal is cool and all, but the flag is still a seal on a blue field.

Rhode Island - Not sure about the square shape, but google images turns up plenty of examples that look more normally rectangular.

  6. It seems I may just be echoing many of my fellow voters, but I don't care. I'm sure we'll have plenty to argue about in future rounds.

Maryland, far and away one of my favorite flags. Did you know they once painted a Southwest jet to look like this flag and it was awesome? Hard to picture that for almost any other state.

Delaware, but only because I don't like the white background of Massachusetts or the severed arm on top.

DC, it pains me to vote this way as a native of Virginia, but I take solace in the fact that DC's is the coat of arms of George Washington, a fellow Virginian.

Rhode Island, the anchor is significantly better than the grapevines.

How can I not vote for my home state, especially when it has such a great flag? Maryland all the way. Its distinctive, memorable, and contains great symbolism (the red and white cross-botany is the coat of arms of Crossland, and the gold and black checks are the coat of arms of Calvert.) Calvert's arms were given to his family when one of his ancestors stormed a castle at night, and his coat of arms represent that. Both coat of arms were used as separate Maryland flags during the Civil War, as Maryland had no state flag at that point, with the Unionists flying the black and gold, and the Secessionists flying the red and white. After the war, both were combined to represent unity. Truly an awesome flag.

    Delaware vs. Massachusetts
Both have seals, and Delaware's flag is actually quite pretty in that picture, but Massachusetts is still simpler.

    D.C. vs. Virginia
Farewell, Old Dominion. Columbia's flag is much better.

    Connecticut vs. Rhode Island
Rhode Island has a great flag. While it does contain writing, its only a single word, HOPE, and the dimensions, plus the anchor, stars and border are far more unique than Connecticut's seal on a blue flag.

  8. dhkendall: Right, the 2x bonus was only for the first round.

pfly: The technical ratio of the Rhode Island flag is, of all things, 29:33. I imagine it is often tweaked to square, and of course every flag in the world is routinely printed at 3:5.

  9. Maryland: This is a final four flag for me...

Mass: at least it stands out in this genre. Delaware getsa point for diamond shape seal though.

    DC: obvious win here

    RI: see above
